Core Specifications

Type: Kennedy Half Dollar

Year: 1981

Mint Mark: P (Philadelphia). The "P" is visible just above the date, between the "9" and "8".

Composition: Copper-Nickel Clad (Outer layers of 75% copper, 25% nickel; Inner core of pure copper).

Designer: Gilroy Roberts (Obverse) and Frank Gasparro (Reverse).

Detailed Visual Description

Obverse (Front)

Central Figure: A left-facing profile of President John F. Kennedy.

Inscriptions: The word LIBERTY arcs along the top border. The national motto IN GOD WE TRUST is split across the lower neck of the bust. The date 1981 is at the bottom.

Condition Notes: The coin shows significant signs of circulation. There is a heavy amount of "chatter" (small nicks and scratches) across the field and on Kennedy’s cheek and neck. The luster appears dull, typical of a coin that has spent time in pocket change.

Reverse (Back)

Central Design: Based on the Presidential Seal, it features a heraldic eagle clutching an olive branch (symbolizing peace) and a bundle of arrows (symbolizing war). A shield is on the eagle's chest, and a ring of stars surrounds the design.

Inscriptions: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs across the top, and the denomination HALF DOLLAR is at the bottom. The motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is on a scroll above the eagle's head.

Condition Notes: Similar to the obverse, there is widespread surface wear. The finer details of the eagle's feathers and the stars are softened, and the rim shows some minor bruising.

Collector's Context

The 1981-P is a very common date. Because it is a "clad" coin (containing no silver) and shows significant wear from use, its value is generally limited to its face value ($0.50).

Collectors typically look for this specific year in "Uncirculated" condition or "Proof" sets (which were minted in San Francisco) to find specimens with high numismatic value.

Would you like me to help you identify any other coins, or perhaps explain how to spot the silver versions of the Kennedy Half Dollar?
